The War is Won

Victory at Yorktown Objectives How George Washington changed his military plans. Why the Americans won the Revolutionary War despite many disadvantages.

Cornwallis By the summer of 1781 Cornwallis had retreated to the Yorktown Peninsula in Virginia.

American Forces American forces led by Lafayette, Von Steuben, and Anthony Wayne have Cornwallis trapped on the Peninsula.

Washington’s Plan Washington wants to attack Clinton in New York, but Comte de Rochambeau convinvces him to fake an attack on New York, and move his army to Virginia.

De Grasse A message is sent to Francois Joseph Paul de Grasse. Because it was hurricane season he would leave the West Indies for six weeks.

Move to Yorktown Washington faked an assault on Clinton and moved his army to the Chesapeake, loaded on ships, sailed to Yorktown. Joining the other forces, they now have Cornwallis surrounded.

The Siege of Yorktown When the siege tightened, the French brought in their siege mortars.

Battle of Virginia Capes De Grasse arrives and sets up a blockade. When the British fleet arrives, they try to break through, but are stopped in the Battle of the Virginia Capes.

“The World Turned Upside Down” On October 19, Cornwallis sent General Charles O’Hara to surrender. Benjamin Lincoln accepted the sword.
