Unit 3: Canada’s Ecozones Chapter 11: Canada’s Geologic History Here are a few important terms you must note down before we get into the nitty-gritty…. Learning goals: Learn how earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis are formed Learn what plate tectonics is, how it works, and what it does

What is an ecozone? A classification system that defines different parts of the environment with similar geography, vegetation and animal life. What does that mean exactly?

Ecozones are called ecozones because they share… landforms, climate, human activities, wildlife, soils, and vegetation. This ecozone covers the south of Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. This ecozone covers most of southern British Columbia and some of southwestern Alberta.

Ecozones Comparison Organizer CharacteristicsPrairie Ecozone Montane Cordillera Ecozone Landforms Flat to rolling plains Mountains, plains and plateaus Vegetation Short and long grass prairie Few trees Depends on elevation Mainly coniferous trees Climate Moderately long cold winters Moderately warm summers Varies with latitude and elevation Moderate winters and summers

What is geology? Geology is the study of the Earth, the materials of which it is made, the structure of those materials, and the processes acting upon them. The importance of geology: mbedded&v=VJaUzJUAvJI

Plate Tectonic Theory Use the National Geographic Interactive Map ( mapping/interactive-map) mapping/interactive-map Display the location of earthquakes Display the location of volcanoes What do you notice about the distribution of earthquakes? What do you notice about the distribution of volcanoes?
