Outcome The purpose of this presentation is to notify Principals of a recent change to the PARENTAL CONSENT AND STUDENT MEDICAL INFORMATION FOR SCHOOL TRIPS Form and process.

Why the change? Recently, the North Carolina School Nursing Consultant provided guidance to School Nurses regarding delegation of medical assistance to students during school trips NC law permits a licensed nurse to delegate certain duties to unlicensed personnel. However, this delegation may not be allowed to cross state lines

Why the change? According to the NC Board of Nursing determining delegation is up to the judgement and discretion of the licensed nurse based on the degree and amount of supervision and monitoring required by an unlicensed person

Changes to School Trip Forms The second page of the school trip form was updated to include information pertinent in determining the student’s need for contract nursing services The form was updated to include additional information needed in case of a medical emergency

Changes to School Trip Process Area Superintendents will be reviewing school trip processes and forms Plans are to have School Health Services consult with Area Superintendents as needed Contract nurses will be provided for students with medication administration and/or medical needs for all out of state field trips Student Support Services will fund contract nursing services as identified for the school year

Changes to School Trip Process Permission forms should be provided to the school nurse at least 30 days in advance of the trip School nurse will assess permission forms to determine the medical needs of students Parent of students with medical needs will be contacted by the school nurse in order to provide contract nursing information Parents are required to contact the agency in order to establish nursing services
