Same-Sex Classroom s What does the research say?

The research says... Most scholarly literature on same-sex classes reported insignificant academic gains of students in same-sex classrooms in primary, middle, and high school. Socially, research suggests that girls are at an advantage in all-girls classes. They felt more at-ease, showed increased confidence, and didn’t have to worry about their appearance. Boys-only classes had management and cooperation issues, and boys were still preoccupied with each other.

Some research suggests same-sex education is beneficial for low-income minorities. Dr. Leonard Sax, who founded the National Association of Single-Sex Public Education, says girls and boys are biologically different and therefore should be educated separately.

Problems With the Research Difficult to conduct scientific research that can be generalized to all students in all settings Studies have been small, relatively speaking, with many variables (i.e.quality of the teachers, curriculum, students’ background, family involvement) Case studies are difficult to generalize Many same-sex programs have only been in existence for a short period of time Long-term implications not known

More problems... Same-sex classes have traditionally been in elite, private schools. Is student success due to same-sex classes or due to the quality of the school/program itself? There is research to support any position on this topic. More research needs to be done.

So What? *I think same-sex education is beneficial for some students. *Girls may benefit more socially in same-sex classes. *Teacher training is necessary before same-sex program can be implemented. *Smaller class sizes may be more effective than gender segregation.

THE END
