Lesson learned from the recent accident

People who have performed experiments, modeling or theory related to NSTX during the past year are encouraged to participate in the Review through a short (~ 15 minutes) presentation of their results. As in past years, the Review will be organized by ET, with the Theory work embedded in the most appropriate ET. Please send the title(s) of your talk to S. Kaye and J. Menard as soon as possible; we would like to finalize the agenda about a week prior to the Review. NSTX 2005 Results/Theory Review Dec , 2005 at PPPL Two very important objectives: To publish NSTX results in a timely manner To give presentations of NSTX results

NSTX Research Forum for FY 2006 December 14, 2005 through December 16, 2005 For the 2006 NSTX Run, Roger Raman of the University of Washington will be the NSTX Run Coordinator with Steve Sabbagh of Columbia University as deputy. The experimental proposals will be discussed within Experimental Task Groups focusing on specific research areas. There will be breakout sessions at the forum during which these task groups will discuss, evaluate and prioritize proposals made by team members for experiments in their areas of interest. To assist in planning the Research Forum, please submit a 1-page (or less) description of each experiment you are proposing and indicate in which of the above groups you would like to present it for consideration. Please send this abstract to Roger Raman and Michael Bell before November 26.

The US Burning Plasma Workshop ORNL, December 7-9, 2005 Topical Break-out sessions (co-leaders) Integrated Scenarios (A. Hubbard, C. Kessel) Macroscopic Stability (C. Hegna, G. Navratil) Boundary (S. Krasheninnikov, R. Maingi) Transport/Confinement (C. Petty, P. Terry) Diagnostics and Control (S. Allen, D. Johnson) Energetic Particles (B. Breizman, J. Snipes) Six Questions: If you are interested in, or would like to contribute to the activities of a particular breakout group for the Workshop, please the breakout group co-leaders A. Recent Developments: 1. What major BP-related developments (in theory, modeling, experiment and technology) have occurred in this area since the Snowmass 2002 study? B. Implications and Outstanding Issues: 2. What issues remain to be resolved for a successful BP experiment in ITER? 3. What are the consequences of resolving these issues, or not, in the next ~10 years? 4. What issues should be resolved by a successful BP experiment? C. What should the U.S. fusion community do: 5. What contributions can/should the U.S. fusion program make to resolving these issues? 6 How should the BPO be structured to best help the community make these contributions?

Fusion Budget for FY 2006 Approved by House-Senate Conference Committee - The conferees provide $290,550,000 for fusion energy sciences, the same as the budget request. The conferees direct the Department to utilize $29,900,000 of funding proposed for ITER work in fiscal year 2006 to restore U.S.-based fusion funding to fiscal year 2005 levels as follows: $7,300,000 for high performance materials for fusion; $8,700,000 to restore operation of the three major user facilities to fiscal year 2005 operating levels; $7,200,000 for intense heavy ion beams and fast ignition studies; $5,100,000 for compact stellarators and small-scale experiments; and $1,600,000 for theory. As in previous years, the conferees direct the Department to fund the U.S. share of ITER in fiscal year 2007 through additional resources rather than through reductions to domestic fusion research … In addition, the conferees direct the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to undertake a study of the Office of Science Fusion Energy Sciences program in order to define the role of the major domestic facilities in support of the ITER, including recommendations on the possible consolidation or focus of operations to maximize their research value in support of ITER. This Energy and Water Appropriations bill has passed the House and it is expected to be passed by the Senate and signed by the President this week.

Restore operation of the three major user facilities to fiscal year 2005 operating levels - Allows all three facilities to run at ~ 12 run weeks more than doubling the total run weeks from 17 to ~ 38 Very Favorable Budget Development! However, Dramatic energy cost increase in FY 05 and an equal increase for FY 06 will reduce the NSTX available fund by ~ $ 1M. General reduction ~ 1.5% (i.e. “Katrina” tax) is still possible. PresidentialConference C-Mod1214? DIII-D512? NSTX012 This is a great news! Let us make the FY 06 run best it can be!
