EURAMET and EMRP Energy Projects – Present – Future What’s next? Contents E2C Conference_EMRP_Budapest 13
EURAMET is... the gateway to Europe’s integrated metrology infrastructure facilitating access to European measurement expertise and underpins the delivery of globally competitive, high impact metrology ensuring Europe maintains its global reputation for excellence in measurement science raising awareness of the value of measurement by demonstrating the impact of metrology on society’s grand challenges E2C Conference_EMRP_Budapest 13
The EMRP is… designed and implemented by EURAMET supporting the collaboration of European metrology institutes, industrial organisations and academia through Joint Research Projects (JRPs). structured around European Grand Challenges in such areas as Health, Energy, the Environment & New Technologies based on Article 185 and jointly funded by the EMRP participating countries and the European Union (50:50) and has a budget of approximately 400 M€ over seven years. EMRP Participating Countries Austria Belgium Bosnia and Herzegovina Czech Republic Denmark Estonia European Commission (EC) Finland France Germany Hungary Italy The Netherlands Norway Poland Portugal Romania Slovakia Slovenia Spain Sweden Switzerland Turkey United Kingdom E2C Conference_EMRP_Budapest 13
The EMRP Funds: Multi-partner Joint Research Projects (JRPs), which are primarily undertaken by the National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) and Designated Institutes (DIs) of the countries participating in the EMRP. Other organisations are able to participate with their own resources as Unfunded JRP-Partners or Collaborators. Three types of researcher grants supplement the JRPs; Researcher Excellence Grants (REGs), Researcher Mobility Grants and Early-Stage Researcher Mobility Grants. E2C Conference_EMRP_Budapest 13

ENG02 Harvesting Background Recover wasted energy – reduce CO 2 emission Addresses EU policy objectives Objective To develop new technologies, devices and measurement methods that enable exploitation of waste energy to provide small, but reliable and sustainable, sources of power – Incl. transduction of waste energy into electrical quantities. – Links between nano-scale device structures and micro-scale devices. Impact Strong links with industry (> 70 stakeholders) Active participation in ISA power sources working group, IEA-AMT intercomparison and VAMAS work item E2C Conference_EMRP_Budapest 13
ENG03 LNG Background Improved infrastructure for LNG one priority EC energy policy Growing importance of LNG market Objective To contribute to a significant reduction of uncertainty in the determination of transferred energy in LNG custody transfer processes. – Developing traceability for LNG flow meters, improving LNG composition measurement systems, and contributing to guidelines/standards. Impact Prototypes flow meters built and evaluated – LNG transport fuel Exchanges with working groups and incorporation dynamic flow measurements section in ISO E2C Conference_EMRP_Budapest 13
ENG04 SmartGrid Background In active systems, with bi-directional energy flow, stability and quality more difficult to achieve Environmental issues and diminishing energy supplies Objective To improve the accuracy of on‐site measurements, vital for maintaining the quality of electricity supply and developing smart grids capable of dealing with decentralised electricity production. Impact Newly developed “metrology” digitisers – used throughout EU Stakeholder network for future energy supply Industry and consumer – energy meters E2C Conference_EMRP_Budapest 13
ENG09 Biofuels Background Use of biofuels for transport promoted EU Directives White paper published by Tripartite Task Force (BR, EU, USA) highlighted series of biofuels specification between regions Objective To provide validated, reliable and traceable methods to measure the physical and chemical properties of Biofuels – Ref. methods for chemical/physical parameters and quality indicators – Analytical tools for origin discrimination Impact Stakeholder workshops Active participation in CEN/BSI/ISO standards, 20 presentations and 10 peer reviewed publications.
