Design a new menu item that can be sold in the school canteen. Your design will need to be tested and the top product will be made by the canteen To be confirmed with canteen staff

Introduction Create a new food product for sale in the school canteen. Work in groups of 2-5 Design, develop and test your product ideas Cost your product. Write a clear manufacturing plan. ‘pitch’ your product idea to a panel of judges. The winning design (that meets the criteria for school meals and is within budget) will be made and sold as a ‘one-off’ by the cafeteria.

Competition rules and tips Work in groups of 2-5 and stay in that group. Everyone must be involved Your work must be documented You may work in your own time as well and may make appointments with staff for extra work if necessary You will pitch your idea in a professional manner as a panel using a power point presentation Your final prototype must accompany your pitch together with its recipe and cost per portion. No late pitches will be considered

Getting started Decide on your group (maximum of 5 people) and assign roles Create a plan of how you are going to work through the task Divide the research tasks amongst the group Identify the areas for research Set up power point format to log progress Create group download area for storage in case of member absence

Analyse research Display results Create graphs Analyse the results What will you do as a result Identify product ideas Collect recipes

Research Create research material Conduct research and gather results Type questionnaire Create data log – excel spread sheets bar charts Carry out/summarise secondary research and summarise findings Download photos

Initial design ideas Create initial specification Identify initial ideas Create plan for testing Identify and create methods of testing Create testing charts (star charts) Tasting grids Rating tests

Testing ideas Make design ideas Use testing methods to test the ideas (including costing) Record results in each case Suggest changes and improvements to design ideas Choose final design idea Costing and cost calculations

Rating test Please comment on the following attributes of the ___________ you are tasting and mark the appropriate opinion with an X. ExcellentGoodAveragePoorVery poor Appearance Flavour Texture Size Value for money (this product will be sold for £ _____) Comments:

Evaluating design idea: State the outcome of each test and then justify your product’s suitability. Suggest improvements with reasons. Production and makingTarget market satisfaction Nutritional valueCost

Develop final design Identify the final design you are making Clearly write out the recipe showing where you have brought the changes from the original trial to make it better. Create a recipe order sheet for the development testing. Prepare and tasting chart for your target market to feedback on. Test the impact of your changes to your product in various ways. Write up test results

Make final product Create final product Take photograph Have product tested Create final time plan with check points for quality and safety HACCP charts

Finalise presentation Include photos, final cost, suggested selling price (justified) Create advertising material Final recipe with photo and method must be handed in separately at the end of the presentation. Finalise presentations using power point Merging all data into power point

Present final presentation Present final project to class 5 minute time slot allowed
