iNES ® – the innovative system solution for decentralised distribution grid automation Intelligent distribution grid management Torben Braje, product manager, SAG GmbH German-Irish Smart Grid Summit Dublin, 13th October 2015

Short company profile SAG - Smart Grid Services SAG Group Leading service and system provider for the energy-related infrastructure of industrial and utility companies The core markets are Germany and Europe ( > 100 sites) SAG realizes a turnover of about € 1.2 billion with approx. 8,000 employees Smart Grid Services Business field: Distribution grid automation (MV & LV) Science-based development of the smart grid – system solution iNES ® since 2011 Award-winning solution (Hermes Award 2014, VDE/DKE-prize winner 2013, …) Experienced as a partner in several (publicly- sponsored) R&D-projects Practical experiences through successfully completed customer projects German-Irish Smart Grid Summit // Dublin, 13th October 2015

Our motivation… …for cooperation Hardware manufacturers/system partners Manufacturers of iNES ® - hardware components (e.g. measuring technologies) or innovative grid components (e.g. regulated distribution transformers) German-Irish Smart Grid Summit // Dublin, 13th October 2015 Engineering and service partners Manufacture and installation of iNES ® -systems; Services for customers Grid operators Joint testing and adaptation to customer requirements; Demonstrators; R&D-projects Evaluation of customer needs Evaluation of the legal and regulatory framework Learn from local expertise Use existing customer relationships Gain market access Sale of iNES ® -systems cooperation

Elevator pitch iNES ® - Intelligent distribution grid management German-Irish Smart Grid Summit // Dublin, 13th October 2015  Implementation of an active distribution grid management (voltage control by using innovative grid components, reactive- and active power control by involving prosumers) as an alternative to conventional grid expansion measures.  iNES ® is an integrated, scalable and self-sufficient smart grid-system solution, which optimally orchestrates all active components to a complete system.  iNES ® continuously monitors the current grid state and automatically intervenes in critical situations (targeted, minimally invasive control interventions). In this way, iNES ® ensures an optimal utilisation of existing grid capacities.  Cost-intensive investments in conventional grid expansion can be reduced or delayed.  Transparent and active grid management allows access to new business segments (enabler for smart market applications).  System solutions like iNES ® are the first step towards the digitalization of distribution grids.

Concept and functionality in medium and low voltage grids German-Irish Smart Grid Summit // Dublin, 13th October 2015 sBOX (control unit) runs Grid State Identification- and Intelligent Grid Control- algorithm. aBOX (actuators) Control of active grid components, generators, loads, …) mBOX (measurement) Capture/transfer of actual values from selected nodes and branches Communication link (e.g. via Powerline)
