ETHICS: WHAT ARE ETHICS? They are principles for living life and doing work. They are principles for living life and doing work. They are moral barometers as to what is right and what is wrong. They are moral barometers as to what is right and what is wrong. They are guides to caring about our fellow human beings. They are guides to caring about our fellow human beings. They are our conscience. They are our conscience.
Actions That Are Right or Wrong Most of us have been taught that it is wrong to steal or take things that do not belong to us. Most of us have been taught that it is wrong to cheat others out of what is rightfully theirs.
Business Ethics The same principles apply to business decisions. However, some in the business world tend to look at another principle first: What is the bottom line? This refers to the cost in the long run, in terms of dollars, politics, or whatever.
Examples The Watergate scandal The Watergate scandal The Ford Pinto case (examined in Unit 9) The Ford Pinto case (examined in Unit 9) The Enron business scandals The Enron business scandals These three events alone led to distrust of government, needless loss of innocent lives, and thousands of lives financially ruined.
Does It Have To Be This Way? Well, that answer is usually one that each person has to answer for his or herself. Do you have to cheat because others do? Do you steal because others steal? Do you wish to risk the lives of others to enhance your own personal wealth? Interesting questions.
Can It Be Justified? “I was just following orders.” Read about the Nazi Holocaust, the Mai Lai massacre, and Watergate. “I was just following orders.” Read about the Nazi Holocaust, the Mai Lai massacre, and Watergate. “I didn’t want to lose my job.” See the Ford Pinto case. “I didn’t want to lose my job.” See the Ford Pinto case.
How Does This Apply to Me? A police officer once stated, “I want to be able to go home and lay my head on my pillow with the feeling that I have conscientiously tried to do the right thing today.” His statement reflects his belief in holding a position of trust.
What Is Our Job? Like police officers, security personnel hold a similar position of trust by assessing and managing risks.
Security and Loss Prevention Should security personnel be held to a higher level of integrity than other employees? Absolutely. Management is counting on us to protect their assets. Employees are counting on us to protect their safety.
What About Risk Management? This is relevant on several different levels. Employees are assets. Their happiness, job satisfaction, and safety contribute to productivity and profit.
They Are What Makes the Company The company relies on its employees to do the best job they can and make the best product they can make. Failure here means difficulty in getting and keeping good employees.
Customers They are our lifeblood. Without people to buy the products or services, there is no business.
Our Job Thoroughly inspect and investigate security systems to assure that they operate as they should Thoroughly inspect and investigate security systems to assure that they operate as they should Continually survey premises for potential threats Continually survey premises for potential threats Be aware of limitations – ask for outside assistance when needed Be aware of limitations – ask for outside assistance when needed Make changes as needed to enhance the protection of the company and its assets Make changes as needed to enhance the protection of the company and its assets
And Apply a strict set of ethics to behavior and demeanor. Always remember: The ends rarely, if ever, justify the means.
Ethics Are Who We Are! Thanks and Good Luck!
