Today… Strategies for maintaining friendships Changes to friendships

Strategies for maintaining friendships Be willing and be able to be assertive, listen effectively and negotiate and compromise where necessary. Show affection in appropriate ways ( doing things for them, spending time with them) Show they can be trusted Give support when needed- but don’t try and fix friends problems for them Show the friend they are valued and respected (accepting them when their opinion differs)

Changes to friendships How can friendships change??

Changes to friendships Friendships can change because of: Something that one of the friends does that causes a barrier to the friendship (a behaviour or action they have control over) A change to their life situation (Where they may not have a choice).

Attitudes and behaviours that are barriers to friendships Putting friends down Back- stabbing / going behind their back Bullying Pressuring them to do something they don’t want Write down 3 other possibilities

Peoples life situations change and this can impact on their friendships People move house One person in the friendship has different hobbies/ interests People mature quicker than others Change of schools

Change can affect friendships in negative ways It makes people fearful and uncertain of what might happen in the future It can cause conflicts and arguments which need to be dealt with Creates distrust
