About UKOLN The workshop facilitators work at UKOLN (UK Office For Library and Information Networking), based at the University of Bath UKOLN carries out applied research in networked information services (e.g. metadata) UKOLN also: Provides a brokerage function (organising workshops, seminars, etc.) Is active in dissemination, both about its activities, and also provides dissemination channels for others

UKOLN’s Web Magazines Ariadne: Longstanding Web magazine, launched in January 1996 Initially covered UK HE’s eLib programme. Now has broad remit covering UK HE and FE’s interests See Exploit Interactive: EU-funded magazine Seven issues published from May 1999 and Oct 2000 Covered EU’s Telematics For Libraries programme See Cultivate Interactive: EU-funded magazine launched in July 2000 Covered EU’s Cultural Heritage (DIGICULT) programme See

The Workshop Facilitators Brian Kelly: UK Web Focus – provides advice on Web developments to UK HE and FE communities Project manager for UKOLN’s Web magazines Editor of Exploit Interactive (issues 3-4) Marieke Napier: Information Officer Editor of Exploit Interactive (issues 5-7) and Cultivate Interactive (from issue 1)

About The Workshop This workshop: Intended as hands-on session with group discussion No PCs available for hands-on exercises :-( Implications: 3 hours of talk is very boring 3 hours listening to 2 speakers will not help the learning process The workshop facilitators aren’t experts in everything So: Active participation (asking questions, giving answers, making suggestions, etc.) is expected! Note: We don’t know all the answers We also want to learn

Exercise 1 What is your background? What interests in Web magazines do you have? What do you hope to gain from the session? What specific issues would you like addressed?

Possible Interests Funding models Interests Evaluation Standards Functionality Authoring issues Quality control Awareness Learned journals House magazines Design Inhouse or out-source Statistics Lightweight vs heavyweight solution Technical architecture Citation
