Key Concepts Arteries Capillaries Veins When blood leaves the heart, it travels through arteries. The walls of arteries are generally very thick. In fact, artery walls consist of three cell layers. In the capillaries, materials are exchanged between the blood and the body’s cells. Capillary walls are only one cell thick. After blood moves through capillaries, it enters larger blood vessels called veins, which carry blood back to the heart. The walls of veins, like those of arteries, have three layers, with muscle in the middle layer.

Vocabulary Atrium-upper chambers of the heart, receive blood that comes into the heart. Ventricle-lower chambers of the heart- pump blood out of the heart Artery- blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart Vein- blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart Capillary-tiny, narrow vessels (connected to arteries) that carry blood away from the heart. They deliver/exchange substances between the blood and the body cells, and then the flow goes back to the veins
