Self-Motivation!
Self-Introduction Tell us your name in Chinese and English. What is your hometown? Talk about 2 or 3 things you would like us to know about you (for example, the members of your family, what you like to do, where you would like to travel). You should speak for about one minute. We will take 3 minutes to prepare what you want to say. Then you should be listening to your classmates. Relax! This does not have a grade. The goal of this exercise is to become more comfortable with speaking in front of the class.
Today’s Class Nonverbal communication Homework
Types of Communication What are some key words that you think of for “communication”? Communication: exchange of ideas or messages Communication can be divided into 2 main types: Verbal communication: communication that uses words (spoken or written words) Nonverbal communication: communication without the use of words
Nonverbal Communication Nonverbal communication: communication without the use of words Types of nonverbal communication: Body language / Posture Facial expressions Gestures Tone of voice Appearance
1. Body Language / Posture
1. Body Language / Posture Body language: movements of the body that express a person's thoughts or feelings Posture: the way we position our body when sitting or standing What do we communicate when we stand up straight to speak? What do we communicate when we are talking to a friend and we move forward?
2. Facial Expressions
2. Facial Expressions The most important one for public speaking is the SMILE. People can “read” your face. If your facial expressions are distracting, they will not be able to focus on your words.
3. Gestures
3. Gestures Gestures: the movements we make with our hands while speaking. Different cultures have different meanings for gestures. It is important to use some gestures while giving a speech, but also important not to use too many!
3. Gestures Gesture naturally, as you would when you talk with friends. Free your hands as much as possible to “allow” that to occur. 1) Use the podium for your notes. 2) Keep your hands out of your pockets, and try not to touch your clothes.
4. Tone of Voice Tone of voice: the sound of your voice and the emotion behind it. Speech experts say that tone of voice communicates more than your words do! When giving a speech, it is important to have the right tone of voice. - strong feelings: excited voice - main points: bold voice - sad story: comforting voice
5. Appearance
5. Appearance The way you dress makes an important impression on the audience. “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” Dress appropriately for the situation. The more professional you look, the more confident you will seem to be.
Homework Write a paragraph (3-5 sentences) to answer this question: How is nonverbal communication used in public speaking in China? Give at least 2 specific examples I will collect this paper at the beginning of next class.
