COURSE GOALS AND REQUIREMENTS

GOALS Build a classroom community to serve as a safe environment to increase skills Build confidence when speaking in school and public Understand the concepts of communication and speech Become a good listener

GOALS Learn to include multi-media and visual aids in presentations Gain experience in creating and delivering speeches Have fun and work together with other students in positive group experiences

COURSE CONTENT participation Class participation in individual and group activities Note-taking on principles of communication and public speaking speeches Writing and delivering speeches visual aids Creating visual aids to accompany speeches good listening skills Developing and using good listening skills Writing reflections

SPEECHES Reading from a Children’s Book About Me: Personal Crest/t-shirt Personal Experience Informative Demonstration Argumentative/Persuasive

Supplies Needed something to write with Always have something to write with (pencil or pen) paper or composition notebook Ruled notebook paper or composition notebook Section in binder Section in binder (or a separate folder) for handouts, ruled paper, etc. Note cards Note cards (may leave at home until we need them) Post-it notes (optional, but handy) Highlighter (optional, but handy)

THINGS TO KNOW AND REMEMBER Listening skills are a big part of this class. Do the math: you will listen to many more presentations than you will give. Check your technology ahead of time! “Cyberscuses” are not acceptable. Have an alternative plan ready in case of a technology glitch. When making a video, think of the orientation of your TV screen and hold the camera properly. Check your sound quality. If the audience can’t hear, they have no reason to pay attention. You may need to narrate “live” while your video plays.

Public speaking is used by all students in their current and future lives.
