Job Performance Requirement Soft-Sleeve Hydrant Connection

A Connecting a soft sleeve to a hydrant starts with proper parking of the engine. The charged line should be without kinks and undue stress on the hose or couplings. If the hose rests on the ground, there should be a chafing block between it and the ground. JPR 10-29A

B The hose is removed from its compartment or the hose bed and it is stretched from the engine to the hydrant. The outlet cap is removed, the hydrant flushed, and the coupling connected. JPR 10-29B

C If the line is not pre-connected, the hose must be attached to the engine’s inlet. If a gate valve is on the inlet, the hose is connected directly to it. If not preconnected, the inlet cap must be removed. This will cause water in the pump to flow out so the engine driver/operator should ensure the tank-to pump valve is closed. The sleeve is then connected to the inlet. The hydrant valve can now be opened slowly to avoid a water hammer. The gate valve on the engine or switch valve on the hydrant must also be opened, if used. JPR 10-29C
