Note Cards 101
Note Card Preparation Underline key words and phrases in your outline. Copy key words or phrases onto the card in proper order. Include citations on the note cards. Do not use full sentences on cards unless they are direct quotations. Review your cards and delete information you can recall easily.
Note Card Preparation Highlight material you have a difficult time in reading. Number the cards. Make sure your handwriting is legible. Do not write too small. May type-make font large enough to read easily Do not abbreviate key words or phrases unless you can recall them easily.
Note Card Usage Do not read directly from your note cards; only glance at them while keeping audience eye contact constant. Do not play with, crumble, twist, turn, tear, or bite the cards while speaking. Hold the cards in one hand.
Note Card Usage Maintain eye contact when moving to the next note card. Hold the cards in your hand at all times unless using a podium. Practice giving your speech while using your note cards. NOTE CARDS ARE NO SUBSTITUTE FOR PRACTICE!
