Who was Robert E. Lee FRobert e. Lee was born on January , in Stratford hall Virginia, he was in the united states army officer. Lee entered West Point in 1825 and graduated second in his class in Serving various military duties in Georgia, Virginia, New York, Texas, and Mexico over the next 23 years, Lee's reputation increased in recognition and respectability, and in 1852 he was named superintendant of West Point.

After the civil war FAfter the war he was employed in engineer work at Washington and Baltimore, during which time, as before the war, he resided on the great Arlington estate, near Washington, which had come to him through his wife. In 1852 he was appointed superintendent of West Point, and during his three years here he carried out many important changes in the academy.

In early 1861, President Abraham Lincoln invited him to take command of the entire Union Army. he declined because his home state of Virginia was seceding from the Union, despite Lee's wishes. When Virginia seceded from the union in April 1861, Lee chose to follow his home state. Lee's eventual role in the newly established Confederacy was to serve as a senior military adviser to president Jefferson Davis.

Lee died from the effects of pneumonia, a little after 9 a.m., October 12, 1870, two weeks after the stroke, in Lexington, Virginia. He was buried underneath lee chapel at Washington and lee university where his body was remained.
