AREIAC CONFERENCE: PROMOTING FUNDAMENTAL BRITISH VALUES TO CHANGE LIVES AND PROMOTE COMMUNITY Monday 6 th July 2015

WHAT ARE FUNDAMENTAL BRITISH VALUES? Ofsted guidance to inspectors (Inspecting maintained schools’ duty to promote fundamental British values, Ofsted January 2015) Social development of pupils is shown by their: acceptance and engagement with the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs; the pupils develop and demonstrate skills and attitudes that will allow them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain. Before making the final judgement on the overall effectiveness, inspectors must also evaluate: the effectiveness and impact of the provision for pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development

WHAT ARE FUNDAMENTAL BRITISH VALUES?

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE BRITISH?

YEAR 1 LESSONS Where based around this book and looked at the question of belonging and difference The 2 classes chose to look at the question: 1. Is it always easy to share? 2. Is it always easy to be kind to one another?

YEAR 3 LESSONS Where based around the Sikh story of the milk and the jasmine flower. The 2 classes chose to look at the question: 1. Why should we treat others the same? 2. Why are we sometimes self- centred?

KS3 LESSONS Where based around the book ‘The whisper’ by Nick Butterworth ( a retelling of Romeo and Juliet with a twist) The 2 classes chose to look at the question: 1. Why do we listen to negative whispers? 2. Why does the outward matter so much to people rather then the inward?
