Standards Reading/Vocabulary Development: Students understand new vocabulary and use it when reading and writing. Students are expected to: 2A Determine the meaning of grade-level academic English words derived from Latin, Greek, or other linguistic roots and affixes; 2B Use context (e.g., cause and effect or compare and contrast organizational text structures to determine or clarify the meaning of unfamiliar or multiple meaning words

How to do it Teach model word. Show visual. Teach word parts. Show math word. Have students turn to elbow partner to predict meaning. (Use word meanings in predictions.) Poll students on their brainstorming Teach math word. Have students rate word of understanding with a thumbs up if they are confident in its use or a thumb down if they are still unsure on the meaning. Ask students to apply words in math class.

EQUALITY a noun that dates back to the late 14c., "evenness of surface, uniformity of size" Martin Luther King, Jr. wanted equality for all races. artin

The prefix EQUI/EQUA means EQUAL Other words that start with this prefix are: EQUILATERAL EQUIANGULAR EQUATION

Lateral means“from the side” A real world example of the word lateral is: A lateral pass in football. It is a pass thrown out to the side.

So an EQUILATERAL triangle would be...

A triangle with equal sides! How many of you figured it out?

Angular means “having corners or angles” A real world example of the word angular is: Many fashion models have lean, angular cheeks. Look at those angular cheeks!

So an EQUIANGULAR shape would be...

A shape with all angles of the same degrees. Give yourself a hand if you figured it out!

The sides of an equiangular triangle are all the same length, and so an equiangular triangle is really the same thing as an equilateral triangle.

Last word for the day... Did you know Mr. Shuck loves the Biebs??? Mr. Mutscher, too!

When you see a word that ends in -ion or -tion, it is usually a noun. association combination dimension division fraction intersection

Put it together... EQUI/EQUA- = EQUAL -TION = noun An EQUATION is...

A number sentence (noun) that uses the equal sign.

EQUI/EQUA means EQUAL EQUILATERAL EQUIANGULA R EQUATION little bit From the Declaration on Independence

Great job and see you next week! You are a math superhero!
