Warning! Prepare for grand-parenting: it comes to us all. Be a parent or a godparent. Grandparents Day Second Sunday in September

Theme

The Life Lessons of Manasseh 2 Chronicles 33

1. Grandparents Can Confidently Teach God’s Wisdom A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children… Pro.13:22a Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. Esteem her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you. Pro.4:6-8 God’s principles, God’s word, God’s understanding, God’s truth. Don’t have grandchild? “Adopt one” Paul/ Tim.

Start Out Simple The law of consequences The blessings of obedience The stories of God’s provision The warnings of history The heart’s deceptions/Hiding the Word

2. Grandparents Can Confidently Reveal God’s Character

Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life. Pro. 16:31 Tried and true fruit of the spirit

Example: The Fruit Of Self-Control Appetite subjugation: 1.Instead of revenge, justice and a long temper 2.Instead of greed and selfishness, thrift & generosity 3.Instead of indifference to others, compassion & kindness 4.Instead of pretense and deception, sincerity & authenticity 5.Instead of laziness & sloth, righteous ambition & diligence 6.Instead of fear & anxiety, courage & prayer 7.Instead of boredom, wonder & adventure & awe

3. Grandparents Can Confidently Express God’s Love But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children-- with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts. Psalm 103:17,18 Manners: the fastest way to show God’s unconditional love (Agape = Action caring) Courtesy to store staff Gratitude for good service Good deeds for complete strangers

God’s Grace Divine enablement that helps us actually DO the right thing.

4. Grandparents Can Confidently Request God’s Grace But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. 1Co 15:10 My purpose in writing this short letter is to encourage you and assure you that the grace of God is available to you no matter what happens. 1Peter 5:12b JMP A child soon discovers he wants to do things but lacks the strength, qualifications or skills. A grand-parent has lived long enough to know because they have creeping mortality, they too lack strength, qualifications or skills.

Our Challenge Get ready for grand-parenting. If you live past 55, you will be doing it whether you plan for it or not. Check your faith – you will need it Collect the sayings of the wise Save your lessons Polish your stories Pray so you have answers to share Look in the mirror and see if there is anything for your “grandchild” to copy!
