ENVIRONMENT POLLUTION ANGELICA HENAO LONDOÑO KEVIN GARCIA ALVAREZ 11-1

ANCIENT CULTURES AIR POLLUTION HAS ALWAYS ACCOMPANIED CIVILIZATIONS. POLLUTION STARTED FROM PREHISTORIC TIMES WHEN MAN CREATED THE FIRST FIRES.

URBAN POLLUTION THE BURNING OF COAL AND WOOD, AND THE PRESENCE OF MANY HORSES IN CONCENTRATED AREAS MADE THE CITIES THE CESSPOOLS OF POLLUTION. THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION BROUGHT AN INFUSION OF UNTREATED CHEMICALS AND WASTES INTO LOCAL STREAMS THAT SERVED AS THE WATER SUPPLY. IT WAS THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION THAT GAVE BIRTH TO ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION AS WE KNOW IT TODAY.

CAUSES PURCHASE RAW MATERIALS SUCH AS METAL, RUBBER, PLASTIC, WOOD, PAINT ETC. RAW MATERIALS ARE EXTRACTED FROM EARTH IN LARGE AMOUNTS OFTEN DAMAGING THE NATURAL SYSTEM OF THE AREA FROM WHICH THEY WERE EXTRACTED. PURCHASE ENERGY / ELECTRICITY WHICH IS USUALLY GENERATED FROM PETROLEUM RESOURCES. PETROLEUM-BASED ENERGY GENERATION CAUSES THE EMISSION OF GASES INTO THE ATMOSPHERE AND OFTEN CONTAMINATES WATER AND LAND OF THE SURROUNDING AREAS.

CONSEQUENCES AT A PERSONAL LEVEL, INFORMATION POLLUTION WILL AFFECT THE CAPACITY OF THE INDIVIDUAL TO EVALUATE OPTIONS AND FIND ADEQUATE SOLUTIONS. IN THE MOST EXTREME CASE IT CAN LEAD TO INFORMATION OVERLOAD AND THIS IN TURN TO ANXIETY. ASIDE FROM ITS IMPACT ON THE INDIVIDUAL, SOME AUTHORS ARGUE THAT INFORMATION POLLUTION AND INFORMATION OVERLOAD CAN CAUSE LOSS OF PERSPECTIVE AND MORAL VALUES.

SOLUTION 1. USE PUBLIC MODE OF TRANSPORTATION: ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO USE MORE AND MORE PUBLIC MODES OF TRANSPORTATION TO REDUCE POLLUTION. 2. CONSERVE ENERGY: SWITCH OFF FANS AND LIGHTS WHEN YOU ARE GOING OUT. LARGE AMOUNT OF FOSSIL FUELS ARE BURNT TO PRODUCE ELECTRICITY. 3. UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT OF REDUCE, REUSE AND RECYCLE: DO NOT THROW AWAY ITEMS THAT ARE OF NO USE TO YOU. IN-FACT REUSE THEM FOR SOME OTHER PURPOSE.

ADVERSE AIR QUALITY CAN KILL MANY ORGANISMS INCLUDING HUMANS. OZONE POLLUTION CAN CAUSE RESPIRATORY DISEASE, CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE, THROAT INFLAMMATION, CHEST PAIN, AND CONGESTION. WATER POLLUTION CAUSES APPROXIMATELY 14,000 DEATHS PER DAY. EFFECT
