This ensured that the S.A. could not rebel against him, and it showed everyone that it was fatal to oppose Hitler in any way. The Night of the Long Knives helped consolidate power because it removed a disloyal Nazi from a very powerful position. By 1934 Ernst Rohm had 3 million men under his command. He was criticising Hitler as a ‘swine’ who had betrayed the working class, and saying that he would not be ‘walked over’. In June-July 1934 Hitler had Rohm and about 400 other S.A. leaders killed.
