Olympic City Selection Process

Every four years, people around the globe watch in fascination as athletes run faster, throw further, and dive more gracefully than everyone else. For two weeks, the world converges on one city to take in the Olympic Games. However, the process of choosing that Olympic city starts over nine years before the games begin.

Selecting the host city for the Olympic Games is not an easy task. Hosting the Olympics is a highly competitive honor for any city. This honor brings with it international attention, and a flood of people (organizers, media, advertisers, athletes, and spectators). The money that goes into making the games happen is quite large, but at the same time the Olympic Games provide a huge economic boost to any city that is awarded this great opportunity.

Your Task Selection for a host city for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games will occur in 2011; however, planning for the proposal is already occurring and cities are preparing their proposals. In order to make a strong proposal to the Olympic selection committee, your city will need to work hard to create a strategy that “sells” your city as the best fit for the Olympic Games.

Your team will develop and present a proposal for a city that you feel has the best potential to be granted the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Your team must create an effective, informative, creative, and original oral presentation. You must also develop graphs, maps, diagrams, and other visual aids to enhance your presentation to the selection committee.

Each team member will take on a special role and focus on a different aspect of the chosen city. Your goal is to persuade the committee that your city is the best fit for hosting the 2020 Summer Olympics. You will present your proposal to your classmates. As a class you will decide on the most convincing proposal, which will then compete against the other classes’ representatives to find out what city will host the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Project Manager Determine the best time of the summer – gather weather statistics Create an Olympic Torch Relay through the host country. Bring team together at the start and end of class to discuss progress.

Advertising Specialist Create a logo for the Olympic Games Explain what the logo symbolizes Develop a poster promoting the city as the host city Create mascots that represent aspects of the country’s culture and explain the symbolism behind each mascot

City Mayor Research the transportation network of the city Include maps of the present transportation system Create a pamphlet that outlines the city’s best characteristics: government, economy, safety statistics, hotel accommodations

Travel Agent Determine what travel documents are needed for your country Exchange rates for the U.S. dollar Available airports Design a poster detailing at least 4 tourist sites or activities – include cost, distance from host city, hotel information

Selection Process 1. Any city interested in hosting the Olympics needs to apply to become a candidate city by filling out an application and questionnaire. 2. Prospective host cities must also submit an emblem created to visually represent their candidature Compose and deliver a 10-minute presentation introducing their management team to the IOC.

Selection Process Criteria A team of experts examines the applicant cities for certain basic requirements: Logistics: Space Access Accommodations Transportation Safety/security Subjective: Promotional plans Plans for such ceremonies Overall appeal and creativeness
