Cooling and Ventilation Activities M. Battistin – EN/CV/PJ IEFC Workshop th March 2012 « CONSOLIDATION and UPGRADE PLANS for the INJECTOR COMPLEX » Thanks to: S. Deleval, M. Nonis, M. Obrecht, P. Pepinster, P. Valente

Outline Consolidation priorities Original plan in 2011 vs present situation Projects list and available resources PS ventilation Details on some other projects for 2013 Conclusions 2 - IEFC Workshop - March 9th 2012

Consolidation priorities and planning In 2011 a risk analysis on the status of the CV installations for injectors has been done. Criteria for consolidation: – Impact on scientific objectives – Impact on CERN’s reputation – Financial impact of failure – Safety impact in case of failure Details of the analysis and its results has been presented at the 2011 workshop: IEFC Workshop - March 9th 2012 The result of the analysis is a “dense” table…

Main CV interventions in LS1 6 Focus on Injectors and Experimental Facilities - IEFC Workshop - March 9th 2012

Huge Requests Compared with Available Resources 7 One additional on 1/3/12 a second on 1/5/12: experienced but newcomers We wait instructions from Top Management on which projects to work Provisional planning EN/MEF/OSS will work to define detailed planning Presently 5 engineers in charge of these works - IEFC Workshop - March 9th 2012

Main projects PS Ventilation HIE Isolde RF Upgrade cooling in BA3 PS chilled water circuit PS Booster SPS primary loop 8 - IEFC Workshop - March 9th 2012

PS ventilation old AHUs to be replaced: – Dismantling: AHU radioactive + asbestos Waste disposal – New system: Same heat load than old system Restore access during PS operation Flow direction “guide” (not control) RP requirements Fire safety requirements R2E requirements NEW!! - IEFC Workshop - March 9th 2012 Stefan Roesler on 17/2/2012: “a high energy hadron fluence of up to 1E12/cm 2 /year can be expected that is orders of magnitudes too high for PLC (in the LHC we aim for <1E6/cm 2 /year)”

High-Energy Hadron Fluences 10 4 e.g., LHC-Levels for Hadrons (E > 20 MeV) per cm 2 per nominal year Aircraft AltitudesLHC Machine electronics equipmentLHC Detectors sea Level (Lowest !!!) Airbus A330 UAs (guess) UJ76 Under ARC dipole Under ARC quad RE38 RR53 RR77 UX85 DS Q8UX45 UJ TAN 10 Courtesy of M. Brugger expected inside the Ventilation Room - IEFC Workshop - March 9th 2012

PS ventilation: requirements 11 RP requirements: Run mode: air recycling at 90% at least (the real percentage is difficult to define due to the high number of leaks around the tunnel) Access mode: air recycling with fresh air flow rate corresponding to the hygienic air renewal Flush mode: full fresh air (3 air changes per hour: m 3 /h in total) Smoke extraction requirements: In case of smoke, RP requires that the ventilation unit shall stop and that, after assessing the situation, only the Fire Brigade can restart the ventilation Still under discussion with HSE R2E requirements: Control system and electronic sensors installed remotely The complete AHUs installed remotely ! - IEFC Workshop - March 9th 2012

Work duration: 12 months Original estimate: 3’300 kCHF Workload of the project engineer is a major concerns Air tightness of the tunnel  Impossible to have 1 inlet and 1 outlet AHU outside the ring: New buildings and services (extra budget) New ducts (extra budget) New opening for duct passage (extra budget) Shielding for the building (?) Consequences AHU inside technical rooms: Long machine stop in case of intervention Low reliability of electronics PS ventilation: possible solutions 12 - IEFC Workshop - March 9th 2012

Cooling & Ventilation for HIE ISOLDE Chilled water + HVAC: 6 air handling units from m 3 /h to m 3 /h, heat and smoke extraction 3 x 300 kW chillers IT3785-EN / adjudication phase (FC March 2012) Installation works Sep – Feb Cooling : 3 x 1.7 MW cooling towers Primary distribution station (b.198) New demi water distribution station (b.197) IT3784-EN on going / FC June 2012 Installation works Nov – May IEFC Workshop - March 9th 2012 The operation of the existing station shall be stopped during the works of the new station

SPS BA3 200 MHz New RF building Key data : – New surface building : 1090 m 2 – Redistribution of cavities in the tunnel Requirements for CV: – Ventilation : 250 kW of heat loads on 2 levels – Cooling : Additional capacity of 3,4 MW (1,7 MW for the new building) Next step : – Preliminary design of the new building – Upgrade of the cooling network during LS1 – Temporary cooling station between LS1 et LS2 for 1/2 amplifier test (850 kW) m 19 m - IEFC Workshop - March 9th 2012

PS Chilled water distribution IEFC Workshop - March 9th 2012 Already done!

PS Chilled water distribution 2013 Mainly to ventilation units. Asbestos present in pipes (lagging – confinement!) Work at height (hall 150…) (impact on crane, scaffolds?) Work duration: 10 months Original estimate: 800 kCHF Reduced program as project engineer will arrive on 1/5/12 Alternative solution: install new pipes and NOT dismantle existing ones 16 - IEFC Workshop - March 9th 2012

Upgrade of PS booster dump 17 RP required a dedicated circuit to cool the dump 27 kW – 40 l/min RP is running new simulation to provide final requirements Meeting next week to review needs/solutions/problems SPS primary loop Replacement of the section valves of BAs will require to partially empty the primary loop. Loop emptied in two phases (around 2 months for each ½ loop) BA4 buffer tank will remain full to assure water for the Fire Brigade (½) - IEFC Workshop - March 9th 2012

Operation, maintenance and tests Several installations shall continue being operated throughout LS1 (see next slide). Intervention requests (drain/fill of circuits, flushing etc.) must be notified asap to be included in the detailed planning. Preventive maintenance interventions shall be made at the beginning of LS1 CV needs to perform functional tests in order to ensure the functionality of the installations during operation: – Safety tests. – Valves manipulation – Degraded mode scenario (ventilation systems) During maintenance and tests, the availability of CV services shall be affected IEFC Workshop - March 9th 2012 Temporary stops or perturbations of the installations might take place according to M&O or test interventions.

CV services available during LS1 in LHC The only operation requests made to CV for LS1: – Linac3: run 2 times 13 weeks: (Jan-Apr) + (Aug-Oct) 2013 – Linac4: supplied from bdg 234 over LS1 (stop periods shall be accounted - weeks) – CTF3: from 1 March 2013 on (ED bdg 378 project incompatibility) – Test stand 3 MeV: running up to 30/6/13. CV will ensure only essential services: – Ventilation of underground and surface premises (tunnel, experimental areas, buildings…) but not the ones dedicated to specific equipment. – Chilled water only for ventilation purposes. – Compressed air. – Raising systems. – Drinking water supplies. – Fire hydrants network IEFC Workshop - March 9th 2012 The other circuits are not foreseen to be kept operational during LS1

Conclusions The list of works that CV shall be involvement in during LS1 is higher than the maximum of its capabilities in terms of workforce We wait for indications from Top Management to cope with this problem It will be impossible to take into consideration new requests later in the year. General and detailed planning of work will represent a key factor of success (downtime period in each plant). During LS1 CV works, tests and maintenance on the circuit will affect installation availability. Running request shall be addressed now IEFC Workshop - March 9th 2012

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION 21 Any questions ? - IEFC Workshop - March 9th 2012
