What is it? A group of unplanned shelters made from cheap materials – Card board – Scrap Metal – Wood – Anything findable Often located on the outside of cities Very poor – No electricity – No running water – Poor sanitation

Why? People – Mostly black – Very poor – Move to cities to look for work – Bad health issues Living Conditions – Very dirty – Unhealthy – Unsafe/violent – Fires common – Beer (really cheap) is a problem

Daily Life People farm Over 40% are unemployed Dig through trash dumps in search of food and shelter Their main goal is to survive Story telling – Keeps history alive – Moral support
