An Introduction to Online Teaching and Learning ‘Good teaching is good teaching, no matter how it’s done.’
Applying CLT to your Online Lessons What do I need to do?
AUDITORY VISUAL Sweller refers to these as SCHEMAS
FOCUS your learner’s Attention
Multimedia Principle Use WORDS and GRAPHICS rather than words or pictures alone
Graphics could include…
Be careful of the following:
Separation of text and graphics on scrolling screens
The Contiguity Principle On-screen words need to be placed near the parts of the on- screen graphics to which they refer.
An effective example…
Split-Attention Effect Text and graphics compete Instruction NEEDS to integrate graphics and text. Splitting the learner’s attention IMPAIRS learning and imposes a HEAVY load on working memory.
Test : To test Insulation Resistance from conductors to earth. How conducted : i ) Disconnect appliances and busways during these tests. Make sure mainswitch is "on" and all fuses are "in". Remove main earth from neutral bar and set meter to read insulation. Connect one lead to earth wire at MEN bar and take first measure by connecting the other lead to the active. Take next measure by connecting the lead to the neutral.ii) If resistance is not high enough in either of the two tests in i) then measure each circuit separately. Results required : i) At least One Megaohm ii) Same result as i) above
INSULATION RESISTANCE TESTS a) CONDUCTORS IN PERMANENT WIRING
PROBLEM WITH OVERLAP Here’s the link to the FACT SHEET BUT The FACT SHEET COMPLETELY COVERS the task underneath it…
The Redundancy Principle
Redundant textual information in a dual format…
Redundant information in an integrated format…
Modality Principle Use of AUDIO instead of written See a graphic and hear an explanation Be careful of TOO much visual or graphic information
Applying the COHERENCE PRINCIPLE Adding interesting BUT unnecessary material to e-learning can harm the learning process in several ways: DISTRACTION DISRUPTION (appropriate links are NOT made between elements on page) SEDUCTION - you like them, but they don’t contribute to LEARNING
Concise Text, Relevant Graphic

The Personalization Principles
Applying the PERSONALIZATION Principle
Use ONSCREEN coaches to promote learning
Hi, I’m Sol and I’m here to bring a ‘ray’ of help about understanding Photon Flux. When you calculate photon flux you need to do the following… You’d then provide your learners with the break down… You could think about putting this information into the webpage… Hi, I’m Sol and I’m here to bring a ‘ray’ of help about understanding Photon Flux. Next principle… Using PRACTICE EXAMPLES
Practice Examples should mirror the job
Critical tasks Require More practice
Frequent Practice exercises are distributed throughout the lesson
Train learners to Self-Question During Receptive e-Lessons So have questions on your PRACTICE page that include phrases like: –What would happen if… –How would you use this to… –Explain why… –Why is… important? –What are the strengths and weaknesses of… –How would this affect… –How does this effect…
Use Worked Examples
This provides numerous worked examples
