Mirrors and Reflection LG: I can name the three different types of mirrors and explain how images are viewed in plane mirrors.

Types of Mirrors Plane Mirrors – Flat surface Concave Mirrors – Curve inward Convex Mirrors – Bulge outward

Key Terms Relating to Mirrors Object – Item in front of the mirror Image – Reflection of object in mirror Object Distance – Distance from the mirror to the object Image Distance – Distance from the mirror to the image Image Type: Images may be real or virtual and upright or inverted

Understanding how we see objects We can see all of the objects in our surroundings because light rays bounce off of the object and reach our eyes

Images in Plane Mirrors When we see a mirror image (in a flat or plane mirror), light rays strike the object and then bounce of the mirror before hitting our eye Because our brains know that light travels in straight lines, it appears that the objects is behind the mirror

Properties of Plane Mirrors The image distance is the same as the object distance Your image appears to be the same distance from the mirror as you are standing The image is virtual because it appears to be in or behind the mirror The image is also upright
