FDR OFFERS A NEW DEAL 1 st Hundred Days in Office FDR’s plan to fix this mess was called The New Deal (like his cousin’s Square Deal, just different) Creates new agencies to get people back to work Creates programs to keep banks from failing Creates welfare program to help people get back on their feet Relief/ Recovery and Reform were the goals

FDR closes banks After a month-long run on American banks, Franklin Delano Roosevelt proclaimed a Bank Holiday, beginning March 6, 1933, that shut down the banking system. When the banks reopened on March 13, depositors stood in line to return their hoarded cash. Created the FDIC that insured deposits of peoples money.

How do you spell Relief? CCC- Civilian Conservation Corps 1933 gave jobs to unmarried, young men from poor families. They built, maintained beaches, forests, parks etc. Gave kids job training and a roof. WPA- Works Progress Administration million jobs were created. Jobs ranged from construction to art/music jobs

PWA- Public Works Admin Built large scale projects like the Dams. Relief Agencies were aimed at getting people back to work and alleviating unemployment.

Recovery Factories Farms and Financial Institutions

Fireside chats Franklin and his wife Eleanor would address the public every week on the radio keeping them informed of what they were doing to stimulate the economy and get them out of this depression. Gains the public’s trust.

Repeals prohibition FDR repeals (gets rid of) the 18 th amendment which outlawed alcohol so they could make money off of the sale and taxes of alchol

FCA-Farmers Credit Association-Provided credits for farmers so they would not lose their farms HOLC-Homeowners Loan Corporation- refinance home mortgages currently in default to prevent foreclosure NYA National Youth Association, college youth, were paid from $6 to $40 a month for "work study" projects at their schools.

TVA- Tennessee Valley Authority This provided assistance to farmers and rural people that were not as “modern”. The TVA used a dam to provide electricity, flood control, and recreational/tourist opportunities. They also helped farmers produce more from fields that were over-farmed, and provided fertilizers.

NRA- National Recovery Administration This was set up to combat the problems of low wages, layoffs, and falling prices. It established price fixing to ensure competition, production limits, and standards of working conditions.

FUN FACT The Philadelphia Eagles used to be named the Frankford Yellow Jackets. In 1933 they moved to Philly and changed their name to the Eagles and used the NRA’s symbol as their eagle.

REFORM FDIC- Federal Deposit Insurance Corp This insured money in the bank up to $5000. It is still around today. (100 Grand today) SEC-Securities & Exchange Commission regulated the Stock market to eliminate shady business deals. AAA- Agricultural Adjustment Act This reduced the amount of crops in the market by actually paying farmers to destroy crops. Social Security Act Relief and Reform. This gave money to people that needed it, and set a safety net for the future.

NLRB National Labor Relations Board- Fair Treatment for workers Fair Labor Standards Act Established national minimum wage and maximum work week hours. Prohibited kids 16 and under from factory work.
