Adjectives

An adjective is a word that modifies or describes a noun or pronoun. An adjective tells, what kind, which one, how many or how much. Examples: What kind of dog? – brown dog, mean dog Which ones? – Those books, any computer, sixth grade How many? – two tickets, most players, no homework

Adjectives usually come before the noun or pronoun in a sentence, but can also come after verbs like am, is, are, was, and were. Examples: I am happy. The boy is tired. The girls are intelligent. The dog’s fur was grungy. The children were energetic.

The adjectives a, an, and the are called articles. Proper Adjective – formed from a proper noun and begins with a capital letter Proper NounProper Adjective AmericaAmerican flag ChristianityChristian church ChinaChinese food

When they describe or modify a noun they are demonstrative adjectives. When they stand alone they are demonstrative pronouns. Demonstrative Adjectives (This, That, These, Those)

Examples: This show is my favorite. (This describes show so it is a demonstrative adjective.) This is my favorite show. (This stands alone so it is a demonstrative pronoun.)
