NOUNS Definition: A noun names a person, place, or thing. Example: John, computer, honesty, school A singular noun is one noun. Example: baby, teacher, shoe A plural noun is more than one noun. Example: babies, teachers, shoes A common noun is a general noun. Example: house, person, ring A proper noun is a specific noun. Example: Atlanta, Joey, Language Arts

PRONOUNS Definition: A pronoun replaces a noun. Subject Pronouns : I, you, he, she, it, we, they Object Pronouns: me, you, him, her, it, us, them Possessive Pronouns: my, mine, your(s), his, her, hers, its, their(s), our(s)

ADJECTIVES Definition: An adjective describes a noun or pronoun. Adjectives answer the questions what kind, how many, and which one. A proper adjective is a specific adjective that is capitalized and follows a noun. Example: Chinese food, Language Arts class

ADVERBS Definition: An adverb describes a verb, adjective, or other adverb. Adverbs answer the questions how, when, where, and to what extent. Examples of adverbs: slowly, here, now, often, frequently, so, very, really

PREPOSITIONS Definition: A preposition connects nouns, pronouns, and phrases to other words in a sentence. Examples: above, behind, beyond, during, near, off, through, under, with. The object of the preposition is the noun or pronoun that follows the preposition. Example sentence: The sun hid behind the clouds.

VERBS Definition: A verb shows action or state of being. An action verb is a verb that shows action Example: jump, think, daydream, sing A linking verb links the subject to the predicate. Example: am, is, are, was, were A helping verb is a verb that helps the main verb. Helping verb + main verb = verb phrase

INTERJECTIONS Definition: An interjection shows excitement or emotion. It is usually at the beginning of a sentence and is punctuated with an exclamation point. Examples: Wow! Look! Watch out! Hurray!

CONJUNCTIONS Definition: A conjunction connects parts of a sentence. Coordinating conjunctions are the FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
