The Future of Organised Sport What are the trends? How are we reacting to them? What should sports clubs be doing? Jenn Halliday Chair – The Generate Network

My Background Strategic Manager for the regional body Squash Canterbury Small regional body of 2,000 members with a wide range of minority sport challenges General Manager for the community club Halswell United AFC Large community club of 900 members and growing

The changing landscape Clubs Sports clubs are merging – Regional bodies are looking at supporting less clubs and instead supporting fewer strong performing clubs – Golf greens merging: Boulcott and Hutt Golf Club Bowling Greens are being shut down or clubs merged Noted Golf Courses are an area of concern for councils at a recent meeting in Wellington Trends? Gym memberships were up in the recent Active New Zealand Survey results, and sport memberships are down Facebook on the decline Pay2Play More volunteers are reported, but other sports organisations still report low volunteer numbers

Facebook User Statistics 2014

Challenges Time Money Lack of Skilled Volunteers Lack of Long-Term Volunteers Funding is no longer a sustainable or stable financial model Barriers

Challenges – Time and Money Time Flexible membership options Alternative games – Length of games – Type of games Alternative focuses – health – SquashFit? – Cardiotennis? Money Pay2Play options (35%) Flexible payment options Direct Debit Options Credit Card/Online Casual Memberships

Challenges – Volunteers and Funding Lack of Volunteers Active New Zealand Survey stated that volunteers have increased We may be moving towards more paid positions within sport Are we heading towards more professionalism and profit-driven organisations? Funding – Business Models “Social Enterprise” is the new buzz word Movement towards more business models These models require large amounts of work to uphold

The ‘almost obsolete’ club Declining membership Financial Hardship New Volunteer New Programmes, Growth Tired Committee

Questions?

Do you see a changing landscape in sports organisations? Are there trends that I have missed? Do you think that Pay2Play is the way to go? Is Facebook on the way out for advertising activities How can a team sport compete with individual sport that is flexible for time? Do we need new team sport models or do we need to accept that this is going to be a smaller part of the sport industry moving forward? What informal sports are doing this well?
