Micro/Nano Fabrication Center Safety Update AY 2007/2008 September 2007

Agenda 3 rules New items Review of old policy

Berman’s Three rules of Fab 1.Keep it clean 2.Work, not play 3.Be aware of the environment

Keep it clean The work area –If the work area is not clean, then clean it BEFORE you began. (let us know and we will talk to the previous user)‏ –Clean the work area after you do your work –ANY unknown chemical must be treated as a hazard General conversation and interaction with co- workers, be respectful of everyone Try to keep the use of Cosmetics and strong smelling perfume & colognes to a minimum

Work, not play The Clean Room and Chase (CRC) are work areas, not places to play or horse-a- round. If you are not working, leave the CRC. –Use the library, offices or other areas.

Be aware of the environment Even if your are following all the proper rules, someone around you can bump into you or distract you. Understand any changes from the last time you did the work and how that can interact with your goals. Use the smallest amount of chemicals, water, N2, CDA that you can. Reduce the amount of spent chemicals going into the environment. We do not have a Bio-Level rating for the lab, if you are working on Bio-materials we will need to set safety standards. All MSDS are on line, Be respectful of the persons around you.

New Two new safety showers & eye washes New fire extinguisher New emergency lighting in Grad office and photo bay Restocking of first aid kits Updating of the safety map with the new items

Review Three levels of policy (MFC)* –3 Rules –31 rules –20 pages Use the web site – * You must still meet all the safety requirements of the University and your PI

Key items to review HF Evacuation routes New chemicals Safety problems in the last few years Others

HF the most dangerous wet chemical we use HF and BOE are the greatest danger to you of all the wet chemicals we normally use in the lab. Why? –You will not know you have it on you –Then you will be in Major pain Solution? Follow the three rules Use the calcium gluconate cream Go to the ER

Evacuation routes Posted around the fab and chase areas Goal: –To quickly and safely leave the area –Know the best path for your work area, be aware of potency hazards, and avoid them –Make your area safe, Quickly then leave –Normal clean room protocol is off during an evacuation –Do not go back into the lab or chase to work or kill time if there is a power black-out –LPCVD tool

New chemicals Must be reviewed before they can be brought into the lab area. Reason –Not to say “no” –Understand MSDS, Area labels/notification PPE to pour/hook up, use Storage, type, amount in use and stored Waste Stream Fire code Time frame Others?

Safety Problems last few years Safety Glass Closed Toe Shoes PPE, Latex is NOT chemical rated Keep it clean! Hot plates, tool, work area Waste Streams New Chemicals Working in the area alone

Final comments Look on line.... Or I can go over them all now! Shoes, not sandals (in Lab & Chase)‏ CORAL –All tools –Some will be interlocked –Sign up now, get training by the web site If not clear ASK!!
