Mining IDEA Evaluation Reports to Enhance Teaching Effectiveness Faculty Development Workshop October 26, 2010 Tom Valasek, Interim Dean of Faculty

Workshop Objectives Look more closely at IDEA feedback Focus on IDEA feedback for faculty development, not evaluation Encourage reflection on teaching effectiveness using IDEA feedback Encourage further conversation about how best to use results of student evaluations

Group Discussion Questions From the sample IDEA evaluation report: What can we tell about this instructor’s teaching effectiveness? What recommendations can we make for how this instructor might improve teaching effectiveness?

General Suggestions for Getting Value from IDEA Reports Look beyond page one Shoot for more than averages Drill down, dig deeper Make connections Target specific concerns Plan effective changes

Teaching Methods and Styles: IDEA Report Clusters Stimulating Student Interest Fostering Student Collaboration Establishing Rapport Encouraging Student Involvement Structuring Classroom Experiences

Establishing Rapport #1 Displayed a personal interest in students and their learning #2 Found ways to help students answer their own questions #7 Explained reasons for criticisms of students’ academic performance #20 Encouraged student-faculty interaction outside of class

Strategies to Help Students Answer Their Own Questions Refrain from answering directly Respond with a question Ask for clarification/examples Redirect questions to other students Encourage student-to-student questions Call on students randomly

Strategies (con’t) Ask students to paraphrase/summarize Pose hypothetical situations Play devil’s advocate Help students “unpack” their thinking Survey class opinions/positions Utilize “think-pair-share”
