Poverty Overpopulation Corruption

1.2 billon people living in an area that is about one- third the size of the United States. All of these people living under the same central government. Hard for one decision to please everyone. 1,000 different languages spoken Food shortages India's fertility rate has dropped from 6 to 3.4 children per woman in 50 years. 30 million people want to use contraceptives--but have no access to them

About half of the people living under $1 a day. Many people living out in rural areas and have very little to no education or skills. 48% of the adult population is illiterate. This makes it very difficult for people to get jobs. The semi-arid tropical climate region of the country is nearly impossible to grow crops on. Tribal people in forests have lost entitlement to the land.

Due to the high rates of poverty, people in the rural areas of the country are forced to find food and money in illegal ways. There are inadequate salaries. There are not strong enough punishments to keep people from committing crimes. India ranks 87 out of 178 countries on Transparency International's 2010 Corruption Perceptions Index.
