Index Hardware Software

Memory: RAM (random access memory) ROM (read only memory) RAM: computer’s ‘working memory’ temporarily stores programs and data that are being used at a given time. contents can be changed and are lost when the computer is turned off (‘volatile memory’) ROM store program that runs when the computer is turned on which loads the operating system. contents can’t be changed and aren’t lost when the computer is switched off (‘non-volatile memory’) Parts of the computer that you can see and touch

Main Types: Operating system or system software: Each different type of operating system makes a computer act in a slightly different way: Interface (HCI) : controls what user see on screen Graphical User Interface (GUI) : uses graphics to stand for more complicated actions that the computer wants to carry out. Applications or programs Instructions that makes the computer do sth. You can´t see nor touch them.

Input device: put data into the computer Processor: (CPU) does sth. with the data given by the input device Output device: used to tell sth. or someone the results that the processor came up with. Storage Device or Backing Storage: (IAS, main memory,ROM,RAM) keeps all the data and software that is used.

Bit: binary digit (a 0 or a 1) Byte: 8 bits Kilobyte: 1024 bytes Megabyte: 1024 kilobytes Gigabyte: 1024 megabytes Terabyte: 1024 gigabytes

Large computers, big and slow: mainframes A keyboard and a monitor screen, lets a person have their own connection to the computer

Belonged and controlled by a person: personal computers Portable computers: laptops Small, Cheap, less powerful laptops: palmtops

One kind of palmtops uses a stylus to operate symbols, including a keyboard, on a screen: personal digital assistance(PDAs) Mobile phone, which allows connection to the Internet: smartphone
