Elements & Principles of Design by Sharon Crews Elements of Design Visual tools the Artist uses. Elements of Design In Haircutting
The Art of Haircutting Haircutting not only provides a service for our clients, but is an artist discipline. For the artist, hair is the medium in which to sculpt a design, therefore, we must see, think and create as a designer http://people.uwec.edu/IRVINEKJ/images/hair.jpg
Visual Elements- Seeing As An Artist Develop a system of observation: Form- Hair Shape Texture of Hair Hair color Overall balance Accenting Facial Features
Elements of Form When looking at a client’s existing hair style ask yourself… Is the form existing complimentary? Why or Why not? Can it be improved? What form would complement their face shape?
Elements of Texture Remember: the client’s natural or existing texture will contribute greatly to the outcome of the haircut. The haircut should compliment the hair texture in it’s natural state. http://www.beautyschools.edu/Schools/Empire_Beauty_School_of_Memphis,TN_38117
Elements of Line Consider the different lines used in haircutting in your design- Lines in Form Lines of Texture Lines in Color
Elements of Color Hair color should compliment skin tone Use most appealing tones Decide on cool, warm or neutral haircolor or colors. http://www.beautyschools.edu/Career_Descriptions
Elements of Contrast and Harmony Balancing Elements: Contrast- Incorporating opposite colors, textures and/or shape into the design. Harmony- Combining similar elements together http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://hsfs2.ortn.edu/myschool/TLedden/Period%
Elemental Observations Note the client’s height, weight, and body shape when determining a complimentary haircut. Does this model’s haircut balanced with her body proportions? Why or why not? http://alumni.pharmacy.unc.edu/?scholsouthwest
Inspiration Learn to listen to your intuitions Observe design elements in art, nature, landscape, animals, and architecture. Explore creative possibilities!
Inspiration!
Envision Your Design Creating your design begins with the foundation of the haircut. How should you section the hair for ease of cutting the hair? What partings should be used? What angles are needed to create the intended design? What cutting tools will be needed to create the design? What cutting techniques could be utilized?
Design in Mind Using the elements of design-form, texture, color, line, contrast, harmony, balance and inspiration, haircutting offers the artist endless creations ! http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://edtech2.boisestate.edu/brownjl/images/rodin_thinkingman.jpg
