Three Careers Project By: Hamas Shaibi

 Does this have a union? YES. Since June 7, 1932 a group of pharmacists founded Pharmacists Union of Greater New York. Oscar Lerner was the first President and Leon Davis was Vice President and organizer.  Years of struggle followed the birth of the new Union, as was the case of most Unions in the Depression years.  The first strike occurred in 1933 against Galin Pharmacy and involved only one worker. This clearly indicated the Union’s early commitment to the motto “AN INJURY TO ONE IS AN INJURY TO ALL.” The Union grew and the giant Whelan Drugstore chain was organized after four strikes. In 1936, the Pharmacists Union joined the American Federation of Labor (AF of L) and acquired the name, Local Pharmacist Union?

 Employment of pharmacists is expected to increase by 25 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations. (69,700 jobs)  GOODS/SERVICES  Dispense prescription medications to patients and offer advice on their safe use.  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-recommended immunizations / flu shots and health tests are now available on a walk-in basis through our community pharmacies.  Counseling and other assistance that help lower medical costs by improving outcomes.  Members receive discounts on more than 8,000 brand name and generic medications, with more than 700 value-priced generics for as low as about $1 per week for a 90-day supply. PHARMACIST OUTLOOK

 There is a chance of technology advancement in dermatology. New technologies and devices are being developed to help identify cancers earlier, educate and increase awareness among the public, and prevent adolescents and adults from excessive sun exposure that increases their skin cancer risk dramatically. But not to the point where it can render a person to be no longer needed. Technology in Dermatology

 ROBOTS???  Not a chance. Here’re a few of thoughts on why:  Robots can’t anticipate the imperfect landscape (figuratively and literally) of the average hospital or clinic  Like pharmaceutical robots (TUGs)  Robots can’t interact with the diverse environments in clinics and hospitals with the reliability of humans.  Humans for managing and advising people on medication and medication interactions will be needed more than ever. Will technology ever replace pharmacists completely?

 Average annual wage: $114,950 (of 2012)  $55.27 per hour  There is 2 years training for this job and education is required:  Pharmacists must have a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.), a 4-year professional degree. They also must be licensed, which requires passing two exams. Pharmacist wage

 The average salary of a dermatologist ranges from 130,000 to 300,000 a year.  Education / training  College degree  4 years of med school  3 years of residency  Pass a boarding exam for license Dermatologist Wage

 The overall job outlook for dermatologist careers has been positive since Vacancies for this job career have increased by percent nationwide in that time, with an average growth of percent per year.  Goods/services  Skin/hair/nails care products  Advice on products and health Outlook/ goods /services

 Yes, teachers do have a union. The AFT union was founded in The AFT took leadership in opposing this blight upon academic freedom during the McCarthy period, defending those teachers wrongly accused of “subversion.” The AFT was also in the forefront of the civil rights movement, filing an amicus curiae brief in the historic 1954 Supreme Court desegregation case Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, and expelling locals that had not followed an earlier mandate to desegregate. The Depression years accentuated the problems that the AFT had attacked during its first 15 years: low salaries and economic insecurity. Teachers union

 Employment of kindergarten and elementary school teachers is projected to grow 12 percent from 2012 to 2022, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Growth is expected due to projected increases in enrollment as well as declines in student–teacher ratios. However, employment growth will vary by region. Teachers outlook

 The median annual wage for elementary school teachers was $53,400 in May  Training: Internship/residency  elementary school teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree. In addition, public school teachers must have a state-issued certification or license.  There is competition. The Bureau of Labor Statistics cited a growing demand for special needs teachers. Elementary school Teacher wage/training/ competition

There is a chance in this career for having someone to relocate or get laid off due to economy. Goods / services provide education Special needs / Disability education Benefits Class room gadgets/ materials Relocate/goods/services

 As much innovation as the iPad may bring to the classroom, it's not going to replace a teacher anytime soon. In fact, the influx of technology like iPads means there is a greater need for teachers. We need teachers who are part early adopter, part integrator, and part mad scientist. The modern teacher must be willing to take chances and able to figure out how not just how technology works, but how it works for each student, and where its use is most appropriate.
