Presidential Text Boxes Ulysses S. Grant was born in Point Pleasant Ohio on April 27, 1822 to Jesse and Hannah Grant. He started school at age 6 in 1828, The school mistook his name for Ulysses instead of his real name Hiram. He was an expert on his horse at 8 years old, his father, a farmer was very out going and Ulysses was shy. In 1848 Grant married Julia Dent. They were married on a carriage ride in St. Louis Missouri, and Had 4 children : Frederick, Ulysses Jr., Ellen, and Jesse. Ulysses S. Grant went to Military school at 17 years old, 1839, he traveled to St Louis, Missouri for the Mexican War. Everyone saw his as a great as a great leader, and Abraham Lincoln hired him as a General. The president before Grant was Andrew Johnson. Johnson was Abraham Lincoln’s Vice President. He stepped in as President after Lincoln was assassinated in He served the remainder of Lincoln’s term with no Vice President. In 1868 Grant was elected the youngest president yet. From Schulyer Colfax served as a Vice President. He was part of the credit mobiler, a group that accepted bribes for money. During Grant’s Presidency he wanted to improve the treatment of freed slave. Grant, a republican, t5rusted some people that weren’t to be trusted. Such as James Fisk and Jay Gould who tried to control the price of gold. In 1876, during Grant’s Presidency, Colorado became the 38 th state. People in the south were racist and Black people didn’t have equal rights Grant left office at age 54 in 1856, and went to Saratoga County, New York, where he wrote a book for his beliefs for American Rights. Rutherford B. Haynes, a republican from Ohio was elected as president in 1876 after Ulysses S. Grant, only nine states didn’t vote for him. He had 3 children with Lucy Haynes. In 1885 Ulysses S. Grant died at age 63 from throat cancer, contracted from a smoking habit. Before he died He traveled the world with his family.
