LIBRARY SERVICES Circa Wireless Inventory (barcode): The QUT experience Garry Johnston Library Collection Access Supervisor QUT Library CRICOS No J AIUG 2011 Lightning Session

LIBRARY SERVICES Circa Wireless Inventory (barcode) QUT flagged CIRCA as an application that may better facilitate inventory of QUT Library collections. Stocktake at QUT is carried out on a rolling schedule, with one branch each year required to undertake. Very labour intensive. Circa’s ability to provide real-time updating of item records in Millennium with the use of a wireless web enabled device could provide efficiencies in time and costs.

LIBRARY SERVICES Circa Wireless Inventory (barcode) Past experience with inventory control at QUT

LIBRARY SERVICES Circa Wireless Inventory (barcode) Main problems with this process:  Potential for data loss (device failure, barcode misreads).  High level of administrative input to upload/import data from multiple devices daily.  Time delay and difficulty in identifying problem items (not until uploaded to millennium that errors could be discovered. And then often difficult to go back to the source data to determine item (particularly if no item record existed)

LIBRARY SERVICES Circa Wireless Inventory (barcode) Implemented Circa in early 2011 Utilised existing laptops and trialled HP iPAQ with socket scanner. Initial testing was largely successful and proceeded to full scale trial for stocktake of Library Store collection (95,000 items).
