Properties of Matter Chapter 17 section 2

Properties of Matter Physical properties-Any characteristic of a material that you can observe without changing the identity You can separate materials by appearance Appearance is how they look State of matter-Solid, Liquid, or Gas Color Size (be careful to be specific about size!!!!)

Properties of Matter (Cont) You can also separate materials by their behavior Behavior is how specific materials react Whether something is magnetic Whether something can bend or is flexible Whether something can be stretched or drawn into wire

Physical Changes A physical change is a change in size, shape, or state of matter Solid to a liquid to a gas This is a change in the energy but not the substance How can you use a physical change to separate salt water into drinking water? Partner up and come up with an explanation of how to turn salt water into drinking water

Chemical Properties A chemical property is the characteristic of a substance that will allow it to undergo a chemical change A chemical change means that a new substance is being formed When a chemical change occurs you usually see heat, light, sound, smell, bubbling or a color change (meaning a new color is formed) You may see a combination of any of the above

Physical/Chemical Changes Lab You will be performing a 2 part lab to observe chemical and physical changes You will mix 3 different powders with 3 different liquids and note any physical or chemical changes that occur You will then be given 3 unknown substances (that may be mixed) and it will be your job to identify what the mixtures are and give an explanation as to why you believe your conclusion is correct Lab Procedure

Weathering Weathering occurs when the environment is changed because of the surrounding weather Can be a physical or chemical change Physical Change-Water gets into a crack in a rock, the water then freezes and the rock breaks into smaller piece or erosion from a river Chemical Change-Slightly acidic rain mixes w/ limestone to create calcium hydrogen carbonate

Conservation of Matter Law of conservation of matter states that matter can not be created or destroyed only transformed The total amount of matter before a reaction is equal to the total amount of matter after a reaction When you burn a piece of paper what is happening to the paper and where is the mass going?
