School Coaching Teachers Coaching Teachers Build resilience by having some sources of FLOW. Andrew Fuller (FLOW is defined as a state where you enter into an activity so much you are taken over, in a good sense, by the challenge or idea.) Welcome and Get Active Each person is asked to share: What’s your name? (use your second name) Where were you born? What is one FLOW activity that you do? What is one thing you are going to do more of this year

School Coaching Teachers Coaching Teachers Coaching is... What do each of the following three statements have in common?

School Coaching Teachers Coaching Teachers Coaching is... “Coaching is about unlocking potential in order to maximise performance – it’s about bringing out the best in people.” NEIL SUGGETT, HEADMASTER, HAYES PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL, ENGLAND “Coaching is a significant conversation…unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their own performance. It’s more often about helping them to learn rather than teaching them.” SIR JOHN WHITMORE COACHING FOR PERFORMANCE “Coaching is a means of helping people uncover and bring out the best in themselves, their people and the teams with whom they work.” SIR JOHN WHITMORE, COACHING FOR PERFORMANCE

School Coaching Teachers Coaching Teachers Coaching is... My Potential? How much of me I don’t know, How much of me there is to learn, How helpful those discoveries will be to my life and the lives of others. Coaching is a key to making those discoveries and unlocking my potential

School Coaching Teachers Coaching Teachers Coaching is... Whilst it takes many different forms, coaching is principally a joint enterprise in which one person supports another to develop their understanding and practice in an area defined by their own needs and interests. The coach will help the learner to identify a clear focus upon which to work. They will secure a positive rapport with their colleague, listen intently to their needs and concerns, ask probing questions that help clarify the area for development and ask challenging questions that raise their awareness of the issue in focus. The coach will help the learner identify new behaviours and help them embed improved performance. Coaching often involves integrating new or alternative approaches into the professional’s existing repertoire of skills and strategies. JANE CLEARY AND FRED PATERSON LEADING COACHING IN SCHOOLS, 2005

School Coaching Teachers Coaching Teachers Coaching is... Using the activity sheet Matching a Coaching Definition with the Coaching Process With the person next to you: Read the definition on the left and draw lines matching each of the parts of the Coaching Definition with the Coaching Process bullet points opposite. (You can draw multiple lines from each of the parts if you wish)

Specifically Us Now you need to include in this slide your own school’s Coaching definition and what your school has determined is the Key Focus for coaching. Then move on to promoting your school’s coaching programme for the year. The organisation – who is going to coach, the process for organising coaching partners, when it is going to occur and what documentation will be kept.
