ITS and Electric Vehicles What is the nexus How does the topic relate to STWG

The Nexus EV owners and operators need information! –Range anxiety is (currently) a driving force in EV purchase decisions –Is a destination reachable with the battery charge remaining –How can driving behavior be changed to reduce energy needed –When and where is best to charge the EV ITS can help –ITS can provide info on charger availability from various sources –ITS can provide dynamic routing to EV charging stations based on availability, price, charging level, etc –ITS can provide information on road characteristics, congestion, etc that will impact EV performance and range –ITS can provide Dynamic “eco-routing” to avoid traffic flow conditions that require the most energy –ITS can modify traffic controls to maximize travel efficiency for all vehicles (including EVs) –ITS can provide EV travel history to allow for more effective infrastructure planning

The Nexus Utility providers need to plan / manage their distribution networks, and EV owners want to charge in a cost-effective manner –This is the “Smart Grid” concept ITS can help –ITS can provide the communications networks to feed current charging info to utilities –ITS can provide utilities with route-planning information so they can prepare for peak charging –ITS can provide utilities the ability to dynamically price their energy to better manage demand –ITS can allow utilities to communicate with charging stations and remotely manage charging (e.g. dynamic home charging, vehicle-to-grid concepts)

The goal? EV that drives itself ITS provides ability for EV to communicate with other EV’s and roadside Enhances safety, reduces energy consumption and emissions

Actions for STWG Research Topics (e.g. how to drivers change behavior based on ITS-provided info) Conference participation Facilitate partnerships
