Who Was George Washington? George Washington was the first President of the United States. He was born on February 22, 1732 in Wakefield, Virginia. He was the born to a wealthy family of English descent. He grew to be a 6 foot 3 inch tall man. Many people have said, “Of all the founding fathers, he was the most athletic, the most adventurous, and clearly a man of action”. He did not obtain a college degree, but instead entered the military. Although, he did study mathematics, surveying, the classics, and the “rules of civility”. He learned the morals, manners, and body of knowledge required for an 18th century Virginia gentleman.

He married Martha Danridge Custis in George Washington had no children of his own, but had two step-children (from his wife’s previous marriage). Many have said he often appeared to have a stiff jaw or stern facial expression. It was speculated this was so because Mr. Washington had false teeth made of wood. Scientists have proven his false teeth were made of ivory not wood. So..I guess we can speculate that his stiff appearance was a gentleman of his era maintaining a dignified pose. Who Was George Washington? - Continued Martha Danridge Custis

Another story involving George Washington claims he cut down a cherry tree as a youngest. – In reality, George Washington was given a hatchet as a boy. He went out into his father’s garden and proceeded to test the sharpest of the blade by chipping the bark off the cherry tree. The cherry tree did die from the damage. This is how the ‘cherry tree story’ got started. Who Was George Washington? - Continued
