Integrating Your Research Making your research and experiences believable and understandable for an audience Definitions Statistics Examples and illustrations Testimony Comparisons and contrasts Repetition and restatement

Illustrating Your Research Presentation Aids – audio and visual Do I really need them? Many speakers choose to not use them when the content depends on them Other speakers use so many that they clutter the content and make the presentation confusing Why use presentation aids? Easier for audience to: Follow Understand Respond to Remember

Visual Aids Types of visual aids Objects and models Graphs Pie graph Bar graph Line graph Photographs and drawings Computer graphics Costume

Technology and Speech Research How much information is too much information? Avoid “data smog” Deception Computer graphics make it possible to distort actual images Unethical speakers alter their visuals to conform with the point they are trying to make

Using Visual Aids Guidelines for using visual aids Criteria  Simplicity As transportable as possible, and as easy as possible to use Duplicate copy  Clarity To enhance understanding, not cause confusion  Visibility Lettering should be tall enough, and photographs or pictures should be large enough to be seen Power Point Presentations should use no smaller than a 24 PT font, and larger font for larger rooms.

Using Visual Aids Guidelines for using visual aids Timing is everything  Visuals should be used when:  You are talking about the item:  “here I have a picture of my dog who won first prize in the dog show”  The item makes the speech topic “visual” to the audience, such as a power point presentation, or a costume.  Refer to the visual when speaking about the item or topic, not at the end of your speech  Avoid passing items around, as those viewing the item will probably not see it until after you have moved on to another topic.

Please Note: Each student must use one electronic form of visual during the semester

Power Point Demonstration

Other Computer-Aided Visuals Internet-based: –Copy a website page and put on a diskette. Simply pull the page up on the computer and discuss the value of the information of the site. –Copy/Paste a picture from the web and embed it into a basic power point presentation Create a html website for local use only
