Drugs In Sport

What I Want You To Learn TODAY Understand socially acceptable and unacceptable drugs Recognise banned performance enhancing drugs (SNAPD) Understand the performance effects of such drugs and the side effects.

Starter Task In the back of your books, write down as many drugs that you have heard of that have been used in sport. Feedback in 2 minutes

Why Take Drugs? Money Short Career Fame Success Peer pressure. Gain Advantage. Improve performance. Money Short Career Fame

Acceptable or Not? Socially Acceptable Drugs Alcohol Tobacco What it does? Affects your coordination, speech and judgement Slows your reactions. Makes your muscles get tired more quickly. Damages internal organs Socially Acceptable Drugs Alcohol Tobacco What it does? Causes nose, throat and chest irritations. Makes you short of breath. Increases your risk of developing heart disease, lung cancer, bronchitis and other diseases. Other drugs: Caffeine, paracetamol and aspirin

….or not!!! Sociably Unacceptable Drugs: Heroin Ecstasy Barbiturates Cocaine LSD Amphetamines Barbiturates Cannabis As an athlete use of the above drugs would obviously be highly detrimental to performance.

Performance Enhancing Drugs- SNAPD Stimulants Effect- Speed up your reactions Make you feel LESS pain Overcome tiredness Examples Cocaine, amphetamines, ephedrine and caffeine. Side Effects Over-training. High blood pressure, heart and liver problems and strokes. Extremely addictive Who would use them? Sprinters, or other power athletes (anybody needing alertness)

Performance Enhancing Drugs Narcotic Analgesics Effect - KILL pain by suppressing the CNS. Injuries and fatigue don’t affect performance. Examples Morphine, heroin and methadone. Side effects: Addictive Feeling less pain can cause long term injuries Lead to constipation and low blood pressure. Who would use them? Any athlete who needs to suppress pain (from injury)

Performance Enhancing Drugs Anabolic Steroids Effect- Increase your muscle size. Allow athletes to train harder Examples Testosterone, nandrolone and bodlenone Side Effects High blood pressure, heart disease, infertility and cancer. Women may grow facial and body hair. Mood swings, aggression and anxiety. Who would use them? Sprinters, or other power athletes (anybody wanting muscle bulk and increased strength)

Performance Enhancing Drugs Peptide hormones Effect- Most have same effect as steroids. Increase the number of red blood cells. (EPO) Examples Human growth hormone (hGH) and Erythropoietin (EPO) Side Effects hGH – same as steroids EPO- thickens blood therefore greater risk of heart attack and stroke. Who would use them? HGH – sprinters/power athletes EPO – Endurance athletes – marathon, Tour de France

Performance Enhancing Drugs Diuretics Effect- Make you urinate, causing weight loss. Can mask traces of other drugs in the body. Examples Bumetanide, amiloride and canrenone. Side Effects Cramp, dehydration and dizziness. Kidney problems. Who would use them? Boxers, jockeys – athletes needing to lose weight. Athletes using other banned drugs

What sports does it occur in? STUFF! Some athletes want to increase the immediate effect of oxygen transport in the blood even more by using a process called BLOOD DOPING. What is blood doping? What sports does it occur in?

PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUGS The rewards for winning can be great in sport. Some athletes are tempted to cheat in order to win. This undermines the integrity of the sport and so the Governing Bodies have drug testing policies to try to keep their sport ‘clean’

Who is this? Why is he significant to this topic?

Lance Armstrong 1996 – diagnosed with testicular cancer Winner of the Tour de France – 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005. 2013 – Found guilty of blood doping and stripped of all Tour de France titles.

Diego Maradona (Argentinian Footballer) is considered one of the sport's most controversial and newsworthy figures. He was suspended from football for 15 months in 1991 after failing a drug test, for cocaine, in Italy, and he was sent home from the 1994 World Cup in the USA after testing positive for ephedrine.
