Street Drugs Companies that manufacture drugs sold as medicines follow strict government regulations. These laws ensure that medicines are pure and consistent in strength, known risk, and side effects. Any drug that is made or sold outside of these laws are considered street drugs. Marijuana and its effects Most commonly used street drug. Main ingredient is THC. Reduces memory, reaction time, coordination, and judgment Reduces initiative and ambition Increases heart rate and appetite and lowers body temperature Damages heart and lungs Interferes with normal body development in teens by changing hormone levels. May cause addiction (gateway drug)
Hallucinogens Hallucinogens- drugs that distort moods, thoughts, and senses. You see things that are not there. Pcp- can be smoked, snorted, or ingested. Harmful effects include bizarre and violent behavior and a false sense of having super powers LSD- (Acid)-usually eaten or licked. Harmful effects include hallucinations, flashbacks, and unpredictable behavior. Never leaves body
INHALANTS Any substance whose fumes are sniffed or inhaled to produce mind-altering sensations resulting from lack of oxygen to the brain combined with poisonous fumes. Inhalants include aerosol, gas, spray paint, markers, glue, nail polish, cleaning products, and lighter fluid
CLUB DRUGS Ecstasy-(x,e) comes in a variety of pills. Combination of many drugs including hallucinogens, stimulants, and depressants. Causes brain damage. GHB-a depressant that comes in liquid form. Causes sleep,coma, and even death. Rohypnol- (date rape drug) a powerful sedative that dissolves in liquid which is odorless and tasteless. Creates blackouts. Ketamine- (special K)- animal tranquilizer that’s snorted to create hallucinations
Anabolic Steroids Athletes mistakenly believe steroids improve their performance. Bulks up your muscle at a fast rate. The harmful effects start becoming obvious in acne, mood swings, nausea. Long term effects include liver damage, brain cancer, voice change, sexual maturity shortened, and depression
