The paragraph some points to remember….
What is a paragraph? A writer’s way of organising text to assist the reader to: Separate the ideas Separate time and place Introduce new ideas Emphasise a message or idea
What does a paragraph look like? It depends on what and how you want to say it. Expository text always has a topic sentence which - introduces what the paragraph is going to be about. Supporting details in the paragraph follow on from the topic sentence
"Everyone is scrambling for water. Cities are going to get the water they need but they are going to have to be more efficient and use it more carefully. So water will progressively come out of agriculture."
As I worked my way through the various maps of China the key was an invaluable guide to what I would find. The population density was shown as a darker colour for the more dense population along the east coast. This was especially evident in the urban and industrialised cities around Beijing and Shanghai. The CBD of course showed the greatest population density in both cities. This is quite a contrast to the rural areas just a few kilometers away.
Short paragraphs? Absolutely! These are used to highlight a specific idea or point. Less can be more!
Fiction and Expository? Both Some paragraphs can be just one word, phrase or sentence “Victorians are starting to understand the need for long-term planning on water use.” “Such a waste!” “Yet the federal and state governments have been slow to respond.” “Bang!”
To finish then… A paragraph is…. A writer’s way of organising text to assist the reader to: Separate the ideas Separate time and place Introduce new ideas Emphasise a message or idea
