Where is the Adrenal Medulla?  The Adrenal Medulla is located inside the Adrenal Cortex (atop the kidneys).

What is the Adrenal Medulla?  It is a gland made of Neurosecretory tissue.  The hormones it secretes are epinephrine (adrenaline), norepinephrine, as well as a small amount of dopamine.  They stimulate the sympathetic and parasympathetic response.

Effects of the Adrenal Medulla’s Hormones?  Epinephrine (Adrenaline): Speed up heart rate, increase respiration, dilates the pupils, increases muscle strength, increases sugar metabolism in the liver, and cuts off blood supply to the skin. Used to counteract the symptoms of anaphylaxis.  Norepinephrine: Helps the body respond to emergency situations.  Dopamine: Helps control the brain’s reward and pleasure centers.

Feedback Mechanisms and Antagonistic Hormones.  Beta blockers are the antagonists to epinephrine and norepinephrine, but are not created by the body. (Drug)

Releasing Hormones and Glands, and Release-Inhibiting hormones and glands  Hypothalamus triggers the sympathetic nervous system in doing so releases the hormones of the Adrenal Medulla.

What happens if the gland does not function properly?  Cardiac Arrhythmia – could result in heart attacks.  Dulled responses when not enough hormones are released at the appropriate time. (Hypo)

Medical Solutions to Incorrect Processes.  Tumors in the adrenal medulla have to be removed.  Beta Blockers counteract the effects of epinephrine and norepinephrine.
