March 1st, 2006Prospective PNG PNG: Databases - Virtual Observatory

March 1st, 2006Prospective PNG Questions What VO does/will bring in our field? What services exist, what do we need? What actions should be undertaken in the community? by the PNG?

March 1st, 2006Prospective PNG VO: access to data and services Survey processing Consortium/individuals Journal publications Surveys Pointed observations Simulations Reference data Physical models Data analysis S/W Misc. methods (IS) Databases Archives (more or less science-ready) Services VO Interoperability layer Client tools -- science user

March 1st, 2006Prospective PNG VO: access to data and services Survey processing Consortium/individuals Journal publications Surveys Pointed observations Simulations Reference data Physical models Data analysis S/W Misc. methods (IS) Databases Archives (more or less science-ready) Services VO Interoperability layer Client tools -- science user Transparent access to resources distributed throughout the world

March 1st, 2006Prospective PNG VO: access to data and services Survey processing Consortium/individuals Journal publications Surveys Pointed observations Simulations Reference data Physical models Data analysis S/W Misc. methods (IS) Databases Archives (more or less science-ready) Services VO Interoperability layer Client tools -- science user Science user does not need to know about VO. The tools hide complexity.

March 1st, 2006Prospective PNG VO: access to data and services Survey processing Consortium/individuals Journal publications Surveys Pointed observations Simulations Reference data Physical models Data analysis S/W Misc. methods (IS) Databases goals, VO deals with standardisation Archives (more or less science-ready) Services VO Interoperability layer Client tools -- science user To achieve these goals, VO deals with standardisation Data format Access protocols Data models

March 1st, 2006Prospective PNG What does exist, what is needed? Access to the literature (ADS) Access to published catalogues (CDS, Vizier) Access to telescope archives (raw data, standard pipelines) Classical (non-interoperable) http interfaces Rare VO compliant services Clients (~VO compliants): Aladin, DS9, …

March 1st, 2006Prospective PNG What does exist, what is needed? Better clients More knowledge discovery tools, visualization

March 1st, 2006Prospective PNG What does exist, what is needed? Better clients Science-ready archives Added science-value. Like SDSS … Need contribution of astronomers (science verification). Reference data. Observations/simulations

March 1st, 2006Prospective PNG What does exist, what is needed? Better clients Science-ready archives Thematic databases Added science value Like NED - HyperLeda Required for multi-wavelength, multi-parametric studies Issues of cross-identifications of the sources

March 1st, 2006Prospective PNG What does exist, what is needed? Better clients Science-ready archives Thematic databases Modelling/analysis services Online versions, VO-integrated, of codes written by astronomers (eg. population synthesis) Physical modelling, data-analysis (to extract information from archives and databases) Statistical tools

March 1st, 2006Prospective PNG Requirements to Galactic - galaxies community Do not overlook the efforts for software development –It is very expensive, it should be valorized –Promote better practices for S/W development –Share the codes, reuse them

March 1st, 2006Prospective PNG Requirements to Galactic - galaxies community Do not overlook the efforts for software development Produce science ready archives –Data producers (observatories) do not have expertise/man-power to bring the data to the optimal level (as good as artisanal reduction). –Key issue for enhancing the scientific return of an instrument. –Responsibility of the scientific consortia supporting the instruments. – Archives of large simulations.

March 1st, 2006Prospective PNG Requirements to Galactic - galaxies community Do not overlook the efforts for software development Produce science ready archives Produce thematic databases –Cross-identification of several sources –Homogenisation of heterogeneous sources –Scientific expertise which cannot be included in the data-model

March 1st, 2006Prospective PNG Requirements to Galactic - galaxies community Do not overlook the efforts for software development Produce science ready archives Produce thematic databases Produce modelling and analysis services –Integrate codes into VO services

March 1st, 2006Prospective PNG Requirements to PNG Instrument data archives, literature and catalogue distribution is not the responsibility of PNG (see observatories, CDS…) Production and distribution of science-ready archives and thematic databases (science driven) is the responsibility of PNG. Production of modelling/analysis services, and integration in the VO is the responsibility of PNG.
