His - story Grew up in New Zealand in the 1980’s Started drawing cartoons at the age of 7 Graduated in 2005 with a Masters in Visual Arts from Massey University Among other things, his work explores the relationships humans have with technology and how we use it to escape from our physical world (especially younger generations).

Kelcy Taratoa

‘Episode 001’ acrylic on canvas. 2133mm x 1522mm x 30mm. What ‘superhero’s’ can you see featured in this work? In your opinion, what are some of the reasons the artist chose to use superhero’s? Can you think of another artist who uses cartoons in their work?

Espisode 0012’ 2005, acrylic on canvas What aspects of this image remind you of New Zealand? What imagery here can you identify with in your own neighbourhood? ‘

Kelcy Taratoa Considering this is a Maori artist who grew up in New Plymouth, do you see any imagery in his work that identifies with Maori culture specifically? Why or why not? Why has the artist chosen to use non-Maori imagery to explore his childhood memories?

What do you think this Maori artist is communicating to us by using Superheroes in his work? Why does he identify himself with Superheroes? Do superhero’s fit in to mainstream society? Do you think Superheroes would feel ‘normal’ in Tawa?
